2017 Excellence Awards - Astoria School District

AHS Senior, Elizabeth Roe, was all smiles when she presented the 2017 teacher of the year award to AHS art teacher Mickey Cereghino.    Elizabeth introduced Mickey with high praises, "Mr. Cereghino has not only been a great teacher, he has been a great role model for how I want to live my life.  He has made a positive difference both in the classroom and community."

Cereghino, was an easy choice for the selection committee because of the work that he has done to bring both student art into the community and bringing community artists into the schools.  Working with the Astoria Visual Arts program, artists have come into the school to share their talents.  He has also arranged for multiple showings and special events where students have had the opportunity to share their work with the community.

Nearly 150 ASD staff as well as friends and families filled the meeting room at the Hampton Inn for the annual Excellence Awards that recognized individuals for their accomplishments in and out of the classroom.   Sponsored by the Astoria School Foundation and the School Board, teachers that had applied for Foundation grants received their awards, staff with 10 and 20 years of service to the district and special contribution to the district awards were handed out to district staff and volunteers.
